“[Identity management] is a complex space that just keeps growing and growing,” notes Julie Smith, executive director of the Identity Defined Security Alliance. “Organizations are struggling to figure out how to deal with it and protect their resources.”
Julie joined a recent episode of the Hybrid Identity Protection (HIP) podcast to discuss these challenges. For example, the Alliance 2022 Trends in Securing Digital Identities report reveals that a whopping 84% of respondents said they had experienced an identity-related breach in the past year.
Identity Management Trends to Watch
With Gartner putting more emphasis on Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR), understanding digital identity management and security trends and techniques is vital for security, IT, identity and operations professionals. Julie notes that increased awareness could be partly responsible for the uptick in responses regarding breach events. But new attacks and new threat actors constantly make headlines, with attacks targeting a range of industries, from schools and retailers to healthcare and government organizations.
During our interview, Julie and I discussed the findings of the Alliance report and what organizations can learn from this data:
- The increase in the number of digital identities and the challenges of protecting them
- The Importance of Executive Leadership Regarding Password Security
- Operational impacts of identity breaches
“There is a lot of good advice in [the report] how could we prevent some of these identity-related violations,” notes Julie.
What is the Hybrid Identity Protection Podcast?
Launched in April 2020, the HIP Podcast is the premier podcast for cybersecurity professionals tasked with defending hybrid identity environments. In each episode, I interview some of the most knowledgeable and interesting experts in the industry.
