How to fix “Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings” error on Windows

Sometimes Chrome has network connection issues. Here’s how to fix it in Windows.

Have you encountered the error “Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings” when loading a webpage on Chrome? This indicates that your firewall or antivirus is preventing Chrome from establishing a connection. But why?

As the error suggests, your antivirus or firewall may have detected malware in your browser or the website you are visiting may not be safe. In this article, we’ll show you what to do when you encounter this error and how to whitelist Chrome in firewall and antivirus settings.

Don’t give exclusive access to Chrome yet…

Before granting exclusive access to Chrome through the firewall or antivirus, you need to determine why the connection is blocked.

So, you should first run Chrome’s built-in virus scanner to check that no malware on your device is trying to interfere with your browser’s processing, resulting in a firewall blocking your connection. Here’s how:

  1. Click on three vertical dots in the upper right corner and navigate to Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Reset and Clean.
  3. In the right pane, click clean computer.
  4. Then click To find.

Give Chrome some time to scan for harmful software. Once the scan comes back clean, confirm that your browser hasn’t been hijacked, which is why your firewall or antivirus thinks it’s a threat. For reference, use our guide to remove the Quick Find hijacker from your browser. The steps should work for other hijackers.

When you are sure that neither Chrome nor any harmful software on your device is causing the problem, you can grant exclusive access to Chrome through the firewall.

How to Allow Chrome to Access the Network in Your Firewall Settings

To allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall settings, follow the steps below:

  1. Right click on Windows Begin and select Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Privacy and Security.
  3. In the right pane, click Windows Security.
  4. Click on Firewall and network protection.
  5. On the right side of the Windows Security window, click Allow an app through the firewall.
  6. Check if Chrome is already listed in the Authorized applications the window. If it has already been added, select the app and click Remove. Then add Chrome again by following the steps below. If Chrome hasn’t been added yet, follow the steps below to add it for the first time.
  7. Click it Modify the parameters button.
  8. Click on Allow another application.
  9. In the Add an app window, click the Browse button.
  10. Select the Chrome executable file by going to C: drive > Program Files > Google > Chrome > Application.
  11. Once the path is defined, click on the To add button again.
  12. Make sure the Audience and Private the boxes are checked right next to Chrome.
  13. Click on Ok.

You can also use other ways to make an exception in Windows 11. Once Chrome is added, try to open the webpage again. If the browser still returns the same error, your antivirus is probably to blame. Therefore, you should also add an exception to your antivirus program for Chrome.

How to make an exception for Chrome in an antivirus

Make sure your antivirus isn’t preventing Chrome from establishing a connection by making an exception to it. The process for adding an exception for Chrome in your antivirus varies depending on the antivirus you are using.

See documentation on official Avast, Malwarebytes, McAfee, and Bitdefender websites for instructions on creating an exception for any program in each antivirus. If you are using a program other than those listed above, refer to your antivirus documentation for instructions.

Help Chrome establish a successful connection

Allowing Chrome exclusive access to firewall and antivirus should help the browser establish a successful connection. So you will visit the web page where you encountered the error before. If the problem persists, you can change browsers because there are many interesting options available.
