Smart Home Devices Market Is Growing Strong in META

According to the latest information from International Data Corporation (IDC), the smart home devices market in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) continues to register significant gains thanks to increased awareness and the improved end-user experience.

The global technology research and advisory firm has just been updated Global Smart Home Devices Quarterly Tracker shows that 7.3 million smart home devices were shipped in the META region in the first quarter of 2022, up 21.7% year-on-year.

IDC defines smart home devices as network endpoints primarily designed for home use that communicate bi-directionally and autonomously with various network protocols. Autonomous connectivity is a key attribute of these devices. The devices operate with or without necessarily receiving a discrete command from a user. Two-way connectivity is also an essential part of the definition. In the case of network connectivity, devices using Internet Protocols (IP) or other network protocols (adjacent to IP) such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Thread, etc. are also included.

IDC believes that better user experiences, increased awareness of the benefits of smart home devices, and improved availability of reliable internet connections are the key factors that have led vendors to increase shipments to the region. At the same time, there has also been a move beyond market trials with one or two products, with vendors now shipping a wider variety of devices to the region.

“We have seen concerted campaigns to educate end users about smart home devices across the region,” says Isaac T. Ngatia, senior research analyst at IDC. “Vendors and key stakeholders such as telecom operators have increased their spending on these devices, and many telecom operators are now offering smart solutions as part of their home subscription services. This has encouraged more sellers to offer a wider range of products in an effort to provide a healthy experience in different parts of the home.”

Meanwhile, the market is home to a wide range of vendors, although some of them only specialize in one category. Major players in the smart home device space in the region are LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony, Xiaomi, Hisense, Google, and Amazon. Emerging players include brands such as EUFY, Apple, TP-Link, TCL and Ezviz.
