Some of the main types of network topology

Depending on the size of the network, operations, and business goals of an organization, there are several types of network topology to choose from.

Frémont, California:The organization of the various network components, such as nodes, links, and devices, and the way they work together is called a network topology. It can be used to specify how various communication networks, such as computer networks, radio command and control networks, and industrial field buses, are configured. Network topology is useful for viewing networks, monitoring devices, and diagnosing network problems.

Here are some types of network topology:

Star topology

All nodes or systems are connected directly to a central hub by coaxial, fiber optic, or twisted pair cables in this network topology. The central node serves as a server and is responsible for regularly managing the data transmission to prevent data leaks.

Bus topology

Bus topology, also known as backbone or line topology, connects every device in a network with a single wire that goes in one direction with the network. Data also flows linearly along the cable path in this network topology.

Mesh topology

The mesh topology creates a web-like structure in which devices are connected directly, flexibly or non-hierarchically to as many devices as possible to improve data transfer. Or, to put it another way, they are connected in full mesh or partial mesh. Partial mesh connects devices with two to three connections, while full mesh connects all devices on the network. Data is routed or flooded in this type of network topology. Routing is how nodes use routing logic to determine the shortest path to the destination of the packet. On the other hand, without routing logic, data is flooded to various nodes in the network.

Ring topology

All the nodes of this design are connected in a circle. The data is transmitted in one or both directions in this case. Half-duplex data transmission occurs in one direction, clockwise or counterclockwise. However, the ring topology can be converted to full duplex or dual ring topology. Data is transmitted counterclockwise and clockwise in this scenario, with two concentric rings or cables connecting each node. It is used to prevent data loss when the primary ring fails. Users can configure their network and monitor the rest of the devices in that network topology by selecting a node.
