Tips for strengthening your cybersecurity in the face of growing threats

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — As threats from a possible Russian invasion grow abroad, the threat of cybersecurity attacks at home also increases.

According to Steve Stasiukonis, managing partner of Secure Networks Inc. in Syracuse, threats are increasing daily.

“I’m sure right now there are probably millions of attacks going on all over the world.”

And he said hackers don’t discriminate.

“They don’t care if they’re a big, small or medium business or if they’re even a consumer, it doesn’t matter, there’s a threat actor for everyone,” Stasiukonis said.

So how can you make sure your network is secure? Stasiukonis said the best way is to buy anti-virus solutions software and pay for updates.

“Threat actors know the limitations of free versions, make sure you buy something,” he said.

Here are some other helpful tips:

  • Make sure your phone or laptop software is up to date
  • Beware of suspicious emails or text messages – do not click on any links
  • Ignore fraudulent calls
  • Avoid passwords and use long, complex, unrepeated passphrases across multiple platforms
  • Use multi-layered authentication software
  • Slow down and read the fine print of websites before entering password credentials

The bottom line? Do your due diligence, pay attention to detail, and don’t be so quick to give up your credentials.
