The Telstra/TPG network-sharing deal is before the ACCC but has already drawn criticism from Optus. TPG Telecom’s chief external officer, James Rickards, said Optus was terrified because it knew the deal brought choice and competition to regional Australia.
The Telstra/TPG submission to the ACCC is available online and outlines the benefits the deal is expected to bring.
However, it is not without criticism from none other than Optus who state that the deal will erode the resilience of regional communities by reducing the variety of infrastructure in those regions.
TPG Telecom’s Managing Director of External Affairs, James Richards, said: “TPG Telecom’s proposed network sharing agreement will benefit more than five million customers across Australia overnight. This will strengthen TPG Telecom as a competitor in areas where we were previously unable to compete, and provide real choice to millions of customers in the Australian region.
Rickard also notes that the deal “has nothing to do with the good old days” and that Telstra is in effect giving up a key network benefit.
“This infrastructure sharing agreement is not without commercial risk for Telstra. TPG will have the ability to compete and gain a significantly increased share of customers in the Australian region from both Telstra and Optus.”
“There is no truth to Optus’ claims that its access to spectrum will be restricted in any way. The numbers don’t lie – Optus will have more low-band and mid-band spectrum per subscriber in regional Australia than Telstra and TPG after pooling their spectrum. Importantly, TPG spectrum is to be used by Telstra in the regional shared network for the benefit of both TPG and Telstra customers,” Rickard said.
“Optus is terrified because it knows this deal brings real customer choice and competition to the Australian region. It deliberately distorts the facts to suit its own business agenda to the detriment of TPG customers who should be allowed access to the superior regional mobile coverage enjoyed by Optus and Telstra customers.
