The GPU is universally recognized as the most important for PC Gaming, and today NVIDIA is innovating at the intersection of Chart, High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI.

Join Your story for a conversation about AI and startups is Vishal Dhupar, General director of Nvidia for South Asia. The son of an army officer and a schoolteacher, Vishal’s childhood years were spent on the move frequently, allowing him to be educated across the country. It also helped him learn about change and adaptability from an early age.

These early experiences helped Vishal find order in the chaos and taught him to learn quickly. He says that when he relates this to the rate at which technology is changing, it is easy to adapt to new technologies.

Vishal has over 25 years of experience in the IT industry and previously served as General Manager – SAARC at Symantec; Managing Director – Autodesk; and Director of Sales at Sun Microsystems India. He has received several awards, including the IT-People Young Achiever 2007 award, for his excellence and contribution to the IT industry in India.

YourStory (YS): What are the main changes and developments that NVIDIA has made to the startup ecosystem?

Vishal Dhupar (VD): NVIDIA is committed to providing startups around the world with cutting-edge technologies. NVIDIA Inception is a free program for startups, to help them scale faster with access to cutting-edge technology and NVIDIA experts, connections with venture capitalists, and co-marketing support to increase their visibility .

We support a global network of over 9,000 tech startups and work closely with them to deliver the best technology solutions and resources.

One of our significant collaborations was with NVIDIA Inception member Deepset. This startup bridges the gap between NLP research and industry with its flagship product – Haystack.

It is an open source framework that allows developers to use the latest NLP models for semantic search and question answering at scale, this is done in collaboration with AWS.

We also partnered with DarwinAI and developed a new AI model to detect COVID-19 in CT scans with 96% accuracy in a wide and varied number of scenarios. The model, COVID-Net CT-2, was built using several large and diverse datasets created over several months with the University of Waterloo and is publicly available on GitHub.

YS: How does this help the broader ecosystem and how has NVIDIA technology developed and evolved over time?

DV: We continue to push the boundaries of AI research and development to create new breakthroughs. These capabilities are converging and unveiling an exciting future for interactive, life-changing AI applications.

We have been continuously reinventing ourselves for over two decades. As an ever-evolving learning machine, we adapt to new, hard-to-solve opportunities.

NVIDIA has always championed the need for next-generation graphics. A strong AI component is what sets us apart from the competition. We believe AI is the future of computing and NVIDIA will enable this transition and evolve into a company where anything AI-enhanced is the next platform.

One of the factors that drives NVIDIA forward in the race is the fact that we’re not just helping store or access large amounts of data, but designing efficient ways for businesses to use that data through AI and machine learning. As we continue to develop new applications, our partner base will only expand, reaching some of the biggest industries in the world.

NVIDIA is united by a single culture, which we consider to be the operating system of our company. We believe that speed is the key to our success and that know-how is a passion. We work in an environment that empowers people to do their life’s work.

YS: Tell us about your professional background and your learning at each of the different places?

DV: I firmly believe that “people make the organization”. It is essential to establish the right culture of transparency, fairness and ethical behavior in the workplace. The ability to follow processes, maintain discipline, the desire to adapt, evolve and invest in the right talent has shaped my journey.

The ability to handle pressure is something I acquired quite early in my career. When appropriate, I constantly search for solutions to complex challenges and look for out-of-the-box solutions. The satisfaction of solving problems gives you the confidence to move forward, which has kept me motivated on my journey.

What I have learned over the years can be summed up as follows:

  • The technological landscape is changing at a rapid pace. Understanding this changing digital world and displaying good team dynamics is crucial to the smooth running of any business.
  • Heeding customer feedback and acting on it is essential for any successful business. Being close to the market and the customer is essential for success.
  • Additionally, I also understood the fundamentals of business, the ability to work across industries and domains, with multiple partners for future growth and development.

YS: What brought you to NVIDIA and why did you think it would help create an impact?

DV: While the initial perspective of the business in India was primarily focused on engineering talent, we needed to create a recall in the market. We achieve this by instilling excellence in all aspects – be it technology, people, best practices or culture. These are some of the qualities that attracted me to NVIDIA.

NVIDIA innovates at the intersection of graphics, HPC, and AI, and fosters critical partnerships and builds a giant ecosystem to support businesses. We believe that India has the unique opportunity to create modern, world-class infrastructure and be the AI ​​garage for the world. In this regard, we encourage alliances to expand the adoption of accelerated computing and elevate our nation’s technology journey that is transformational and future-ready.

YS: What was your vision of NVIDIA when you joined, and how has that translated into the field?

DV: Our invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined modern computer graphics, and revolutionized parallel computing. More recently, GPU computing sparked the age of AI. NVIDIA is a “learning machine” that constantly evolves by adapting to new, hard-to-solve opportunities that we can tackle and that matter to the world.

As a platform company building on ONE architecture so that a large installed base is formed over time, our platform is more valuable to more customers.

We cover a wide range – from chips to computing platforms; from stacks of acceleration for every domain and application, to deep engagement with the market and ecosystem.

Our developers create applications on our unique computing platforms, and our solutions serve a variety of markets, from gaming and scientific computing to automotive and healthcare.

YS: How does NVIDIA help large enterprises identify, create, and scale AI initiatives that align with and transform their business value?

DV: As businesses become more data-focused, the demand for AI technology has increased. From voice recognition and recommendation systems to medical imaging and improving supply chain management, AI technology provides businesses with the computing power, tools and algorithms their teams need to do their life’s work.

NVIDIA has designed end-to-end AI and data science solutions and frameworks that enable every business to achieve their AI-powered ambitions.

Accelerated computing and artificial intelligence are powering the next generation of healthcare. This technology is impacting many aspects of the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem with software-defined instruments, federated learning, and bio-revolution.

With a single platform for imaging, genomics, patient monitoring and drug discovery, deployed anywhere, from embedded to edge to data center, on-premises, to the cloud or hybrid, NVIDIA Clara™ enables the healthcare industry to innovate and accelerate the journey to precision Medicine.

As part of redefining modern luxury and integrating intelligence into the customer experience, we recently partnered with Jaguar Land Rover to develop their upcoming vehicles on the full NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion 8 platform, with DRIVE Orin offering a wide range of active safety, automated driving and parking systems, as well as driver assistance systems based on DRIVE AV software.

YS: What are your future projects?

DV: We have seen an acceleration of digital transformation in our country over the past 18 months, more than we have ever seen in the past 10 years. India has a large base of developers, and it is important to train and develop these developers with our expertise. We believe that the Indian developer community is playing a major role in the AI ​​revolution and there will be huge business opportunities in the Indian IT ecosystem as a whole.
